# EP1: The Pipeline
**Series:** Fox News — Standalone Arc
**Slug:** `fox_news/the_pipeline`
**Length target:** 12–15 min
**Status:** Outlined — narration not yet written

---

## Premise
Fox News is not a news organization that occasionally gets things wrong. It is a **narrative pipeline**: a structured, repeatable process by which a political outcome is selected in advance, and the "news" is reverse-engineered to produce that outcome. The pipeline has four stages — **Assignment → Framing → Amplification → Feedback Loop** — and by the time a story reaches air, the conclusion is already baked in. This episode names the pipeline, shows each stage, and walks one recent story through all four.

## Why this episode exists
Every other outlet in the right-wing media ecosystem borrows from Fox. The pipeline is the source code. If the audience understands the pipeline, every later episode (Opinion vs News, The Lawsuit, The Hosts, The Audience) is a case study in the mechanism — not a standalone horror story.

## The hook (cold open, ≤15 sec)
> "In January 2025, Fox News ran over 400 segments on a single story that turned out to be false. Not one retraction named the pipeline that produced it. Tonight — the pipeline."

*Receipt placeholder: Media Matters monthly segment-log archive. Pin a specific month at script stage.*

## Segment contract
| Section | Beat | Duration | Presenter? |
|---|---|---|---|
| `OPEN` | Hook + thesis: "Fox is a pipeline, not a newsroom." | 0:00–0:45 | ✅ Sasha to camera |
| `NARRATOR` | **Stage 1 — Assignment:** how stories are selected from the top (the "memo" culture, documented in the Dominion depositions). | 0:45–3:30 | — |
| `PRESENTER` | Sasha bridge: "It starts before a single word is written." | 3:30–4:00 | ✅ Sasha to camera |
| `NARRATOR` | **Stage 2 — Framing:** chyron discipline, guest selection, the difference between "asking questions" and "asserting conclusions." Side-by-side receipts. | 4:00–7:00 | — |
| `NARRATOR` | **Stage 3 — Amplification:** prime-time loop, same story across 3 hosts, social clipping. | 7:00–9:30 | — |
| `PRESENTER` | Sasha walks the feedback loop: "The audience doesn't just watch. They repeat back. That's Stage 4." | 9:30–10:15 | ✅ Sasha to camera |
| `NARRATOR` | **Stage 4 — Feedback Loop:** callers, town halls, Trump re-posts, the base repeating the framing back as if it originated with them. | 10:15–12:30 | — |
| `CLOSE` | Resolve + CTA: "Next episode — the wall between opinion and news. It doesn't exist. Here's the proof." | 12:30–13:15 | ✅ Sasha to camera |
