# EP5: The Audience
**Series:** Fox News — Standalone Arc
**Slug:** `fox_news/the_audience`
**Length target:** 12–15 min
**Status:** Outlined — narration not yet written

## Premise
The pipeline from Episode 1 only works because of **who is on the other end**. This episode is not about mocking Fox viewers — it is about **documenting the measurable effect**: what happens to a person's beliefs, voting behavior, and relationship to verified fact after sustained Fox consumption, per the best available research. The pipeline described in Episodes 1–4 produces documented outcomes: in belief accuracy, in partisan polarization, in the 2020 election and its aftermath. The audience is not the villain of this series. The audience is the evidence.

## Why this episode exists
The four prior episodes risk reading as anti-Fox polemic if the question "so what?" isn't answered. This episode answers it with data: natural experiments, panel studies, and post-2020 research showing what Fox consumption does to belief formation. It closes the arc by returning the focus to the audience as **the people the pipeline was designed to affect** — which reframes the series as a defense of those viewers, not an attack on them.

## The hook (cold open, ≤15 sec)
> "Researchers ran an experiment: pay Fox viewers to watch CNN for a month. Their beliefs changed — measurably, in 30 days. Tonight: what the pipeline does to the people who watch it."

*Receipt: Broockman & Kalla / Berkowitz et al. Fox-CNN natural experiment studies (2022–2024). Pin the specific study at script stage.*

## Segment contract
| Section | Beat | Duration | Presenter? |
|---|---|---|---|
| `OPEN` | Hook + thesis: "The audience is the evidence." | 0:00–0:45 | ✅ Sasha to camera |
| `NARRATOR` | **Who watches:** demographics, reach, the median Fox viewer — not a caricature, a profile built from Pew/Nielsen data. | 0:45–3:30 | — |
| `NARRATOR` | **The belief effect, Part 1:** the natural-experiment literature (Fox vs non-Fox exposure, belief divergence on specific factual questions). | 3:30–6:30 | — |
| `PRESENTER` | Sasha names the stakes: "This isn't about being dumb. It's about being *served false information by design*, then being blamed for believing it. The blame belongs at the other end of the pipeline." | 6:30–7:15 | ✅ Sasha to camera |
| `NARRATOR` | **The belief effect, Part 2 — 2020 as case study:** Dominion-era Fox viewership and stolen-election belief correlation; the Jan 6 timeline and prime-time content the night before. | 7:15–10:00 | — |
| `NARRATOR` | **The off-ramp:** what the research says about de-consolidation — what happens when viewers leave, and what this series is actually for. | 10:00–12:00 | — |
| `CLOSE` | Resolve + series CTA: "This series named the pipeline, the wall, the lawsuit, the hosts, and you — the audience. The receipts are in the show notes. The next despinning is yours." | 12:00–13:00 | ✅ Sasha to camera |

## Receipts to gather before script
- Fox-CNN natural experiment study (Broockman & Kalla or equivalent; pin at script stage)
- Pew Research Fox viewership demographic profile (most recent available)
- Post-2020 stolen-election belief polling broken down by primary news source
- Jan 6 prime-time Fox schedule (Jan 5–6, 2021) vs. the timeline as it unfolded
- De-consolidation / belief-shift literature (pin at script stage)

## Production notes
- VST visuals: demographic chart pack, study-design explainer animation, 2020 timeline with parallel prime-time schedule.
- Tone: this is the episode where the series' posture becomes explicit — **despinning in defense of the audience, not contempt for them.** Every edit should be checked against that standard.
