"Real Texans do not run from a fight." That's Greg Abbott, Republican, governor of Texas. On July 22, 2025, the Texas Tribune reported, citing two people who had spoken to Abbott and the White House, that he was "initially resistant" to a mid-decade redistricting plan pushed by Donald Trump's political team. Then Trump called. Abbott put the map on his special session agenda, right next to flood relief and property tax cuts. In public, the reason was "constitutional concerns raised by the U.S. Department of Justice." On a call with Texas GOP members of Congress, Trump said his political team intended to flip five seats. More than fifty Texas House Democrats left the state to break quorum. Abbott threatened to remove them from their seats using a nonbinding 2021 attorney general opinion, and he talked about extraditing "out-of-state FELONS." A federal court in El Paso later ruled the map he signed was a racial gerrymander. In fairness: an unnamed person familiar with Abbott's thinking told the Tribune it was "inaccurate" to call him reluctant, and declined to give any details.
